Neroli Essential Oil

Neroli Essential Oil can be used daily to lower blood pressure, remove scars, treat menopausal symptoms and menstrual cramps; it can act as a tranquilizer to relax your mind, reduce acute and chronic inflammation and help with arthritis or muscular pain; it can help with insomnia and even treat a seizure.

What is Neroli Essential Oil?

Let's start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Neroli Essential Oil

Family:  Rutaceae
Origins:  Tunesia and Morocco
Other Names:  Orange blossom, orange flower, Citrus bigaradia
Description:  An evergreen tree with glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers. Flowers are picked twice a year. 
Extraction:  Essential oil by steam distillation
Botanical Part Used: Freshly picked flowers

Principal Constituents:  Linalol (about 34%), linalyl acetate (6 - 17%), limonene (about 15%), pinene, nerolidol, geraniol, nerol, methyl antrhranilate, indole, citral, and others.

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition 
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Avoid direct sunlight or UV rays up to 12 hours after applying
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution
  • Sensitive Skin - Should be used with caution on delicate skin; a carrier oil may be useful

Suggested Uses

Blood Pressure

Essential oil inhalation on blood pressure and salivary cortisol levels in prehypertensive and hypertensive subjects. PubMed.gov

Studies have shown that inhalation of Neroli Essential Oil can have immediate and continuous positive effects on blood pressure in prehypertensive and hypertensive patients.

You can use Neroli Oil in a diffuser on a daily basis to lower your blood pressure as well as cortisol levels. For even better results, include Lavender, Marjoram and Ylang-Ylang

Deodorant

Neroli Essential Oil has antibacterial properties that can reduce germs and bacteria which cause the unpleasant odor from perspiration.

Emotional Balance

Neroli Essential Oil has soothing properties which can relax the mind and relieve or reduce:

  • despair
  • grief

Put a couple drops in a relaxing hot bath or use a diffuser at bed time.

note: Neroli is very expensive so you may not want to use too much at one time. If your goal is going to sleep at night, I suggest you try putting a drop of Lavender Oil on the soles of your feet instead.

Inflammation

Neroli Essential Oil has therapeutic properties which have the ability to reduce acute and chronic inflammation as well as reduce central and peripheral sensitivity to pain.

Are you suffering from arthritis or muscular pain? The anti-inflammatory properties of Neroli can help ease your discomfort.

Mix Neroli in a 50:50 blend with fractionated coconut oil and rub it in to the affected area.

Insomnia

Neroli Essential Oil is quite soothing and can be used in a hot relaxing bath or diffused at bed time to induce sleep.

It also works very well when combined with Lavender and Chamomile oils.

Pain Management

Neroli Essential Oil is an effective option for managing pain and studies have confirmed that it has the ability to reduce chronic as well as acute inflammation. 

Put some Neroli Oil on a compress (hot or cold) and apply it to the area of concern.

Reproductive System

Massaging Neroli Essential Oil onto the abdomen can help treat menstrual cramps.

Inhalation of neroli oil helps relieve menopausal symptoms, increase sexual desire, and reduce blood pressure in postmenopausal women.  PubMed.gov

Inhalation of the oil is known to relieve menopausal symptoms, improve estrogen concentrations and improve the endocrine system.

Use a diffuser for this.

Other Oils for the Reproductive System

Scarring

Neroli Essential Oil is able to rejuvenate your skin at a deep level which is necessary to remove scars such as you can get from acne. 

Mix one drop of Neroli with several drops of carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil and apply daily for several weeks. 

Your skin will look hydrated and very healthy.

Other Oils for Scarring

Seizure

The usual essential oil recommendations for treating a seizure appears to be Chamomile, Clary Sage, Lavender, Frankincense, Jasmine and Ylang Ylang. Recently, however, I came across a study that indicates Neroli Essential Oil should be added to this list.

  • The results suggest that neroli possesses biologically active constituent(s) that have anticonvulsant activity which supports the ethnomedicinal claims of the use of the plant in the management of seizure.  PubMed.gov

  • Fennel
  • Hyssop
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Spike Lavender *

Neroli Essential Oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that work on all skin types and is great on problems such as:

  • sensitive skin
  • scars
  • stretch marks
  • thread veins
  • wrinkles

Neroli is the best essential oil for tightening your skin due to a natural chemical ingredient called citral. Citral helps to regenerate skin cells and is also helpful in treating scarred tissue. 

It is often used in daily moisturizers, anti aging creams & masks because of its ability to improve skin resilience.

Add one drop to each application of skin care product used daily.

Stress Management
