Natural Deodorant

There are several Essential oils that can be used in an effective natural deodorant that limits the toxins you come in contact with each and every day.

Deodorants purchased at the drug store are manufactured using irritating fragrances, harmful chemicals and heavy metals like aluminum which can cause several health complications and very serious diseases such as cancer.

Making your own deodorant using natural products and essential oils is not only healthier for you but, in most cases, cheaper. 

How Can Essential Oils Assist?

Did you know that your sweat doesn't actually have an odor? The odor you smell comes only when your sweat mixes with bacteria on your skin. Essential Oils kill the bacteria thereby eliminating the odor before it can form.

Typically, oils that work well in a natural deodorant application should have one or more of the following properties:

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot Essential Oil has therapeutic properties. It is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and of course a natural deodorant.

It acts as a deodorizer by eliminating the bad odors and replacing them with its own sweet sent which is fruity, floral, citrusy, sweet, uplifting, lively and fresh.

Bergamot can be added to your deodorant stick or mixed with a carrier oil such as aloe and fractionated coconut and rubbed directly on your skin.

Bergamot is known as a "top note" oil. See below for an explanation of "Top Note" oils.

Avoid sun exposure for 12 hours after using Bergamot.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage Essential Oil has both anti fungal and antibacterial properties. It has a sharp, spicy, herbal, camphoric smell.

When mixed with a little water it works as a very effective natural deodorant without side affects like allergies and skin irritation.

Eucalyptus Globulus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Globulus is a disinfectant. It has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. 

As a natural deodorant its smell is fresh, medicinal, slightly woody, earthly and evergreen.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium Essential Oil has anti-fungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial properties so it can be used as a natural deodorant to eliminate body odors.

Geranium is ideal as a deodorant because sweating actually releases its pleasant aroma rather than eliminating it and it lasts for a long time. Its natural rose-like/mint smell is very pleasant and will keep you smelling fresh every day.

Lavandin Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Oil is antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and as well as a powerful stimulant for your immune system. It is also a broad spectrum antimicrobial.

It is very soothing on itchy rashes and provides immediate relief against yeast infection.

Its scent is fresh, spicy, camphoric, warm, medicinal, woody, earthy and herbal.

Gentle on the skin but very powerful microbial so works great as a natural deodorant especially if you have very strong body odor.

What are "Top" and "Middle" Note Oils?

Top Note Oils

Top note oils are usually the first thing you sense and typically have anti-viral properties.

Oils like cinnamon, lemongrass, peppermint and thyme are recognizable by their sharp odors which can come on strong initially but tend to fade quickly as they evaporate. 

This "flash-in-the-pan" nature makes them popular because the smell doesn't linger and offend others as you go about your day. 

Middle Note Oils

Middle Note oils form the heart of the blend and are normally warm and soft fragrances. Although they take up 50-80% of the blend, they are usually not immediately detectable but will make their presence known as the "Top Note" oils subside.

Middle Notes, such as chamomile, lavender and marjoram, are known as enhancers.

3 Suggested Recipes

Recipe #1

Mix the following ingredients

• 10 drops of your choice of Essential Oil
• 1/4 cup cornstarch (increase the amount for sensitive skin)
• 1/4 cup baking soda 
• 2 table spoons of Coconut Oil
• 75ml Empty Deodorant Container
  

1. Combine the first 3 ingredients and mix well
2. Add the coconut oil and stir until you get a smooth mixture
3. Spoon the mixture into the empty Deodorant Container
4. Allow to set for a few days

Recipe #2

Mix the following ingredients

• 1 small jar
• 1 tablespoon cornstarch 
  
• 1 tablespoon baking soda 
• 1 tablespoon 100% Natural Shea Butter
• 5-10 drops of your choice of Essential Oil

1. Combine the first 2 ingredients in the small jar and mix well
2. Add the Shea Butter and Essential Oil
3. Stir until you get a velvety, whipped texture

Recipe #3

Witch Hazel-Based Deodorant Spray

• 1 amber glass spray bottle
• ½ cup (118 ml) Witch Hazel
• ¼ cup (85 g) Aloe Vera Gel or Juice
• ¼ teaspoon (1.75 g) baking soda
• 10 drops of your choice of Essential Oil

Pour the witch hazel in a spray bottle then add the rest of the ingredients. Gently shake the bottle before each use.
